Ayurvedic Understanding of Shiroabhyanga

The head is considered the Manas (mind) seat in Ayurveda, housing the Indriyas (sensory organs). Shiroabhyanga stimulates these vital areas, promoting the flow of Prana (life energy) to the brain, which helps calm the nervous system and restore balance.

Procedure of Shiroabhyanga

1. Poorva Karma (Preparation)

  • The patient is seated comfortably.
  • The herbal oil is warmed using indirect heating to ensure a suitable temperature.

2. Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)

  • The warmed oil is gently applied to the scalp using fingers.
  • Various hand movements, such as circular motions, tapping, and light pressure on specific points, are performed on the head, neck, and shoulders.
  • Key areas targeted include the temples, forehead, and scalp, regions where tension commonly accumulates.

3. Paschat Karma (Post-Procedure Care)

  • The patient rests for 15 minutes.
  • A head bath with warm water is recommended, using herbal products instead of soap for cleansing.

Direction of Abhyanga

According to Chikitsa Manjari and Chikitsa Sangraha, Abhyanga should generally be performed in Anuloma Gati (downward or same direction) for optimal benefits.
