Management of Dyslipidaemia Through Ayurvedic Intervention: Abstract

Dyslipidemia is one of the commonest presentation and major cause for various lifestyle disorders like cardiovascular diseases, pancreatitis, fatty liver, and many other diseases. The prevalence of High Cholesterol is present in 25-30% of Urban and 15-20% in rural subjects in Indian Population [1]. According to Ayurveda, Dyslipidemia is the corresponding output of Medovaha srotodushti.

In Ayurveda, the line of treatment for medoroga is shodhana karma (Basti / Virechana chikitsa), Rukshana chikitsa, Udvartana, Shamana chikitsa Nidan parivarjana. Virechana therapy is considered a purificatory procedure that improves the functions of the digestive system by way of intensive purgation. This therapy removes the toxins and waste from the body up to the cellular levels by excessive secretion of digestive juices, enzymes, and bile.

Case Presentation:

A 45-year-old male diagnosed with high cholesterol for 1 year was treated with ayurveda medication and therapeutic procedures.

Treatment:

The Ayurvedic practitioners at Adyant Ayurveda prescribed a comprehensive treatment protocol tailored to the patient’s individual constitution and disease.

The treatment plan included;

1. DIETARY & LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS

  • Timely meal schedule.
  • Consume freshly prepared, warm food.
  • Cooked vegetables, whole grains.
  • Instructed to avoid curd, paneer ,deep fried, refridgerated , cheese, chocolates ,sweets and sour foods.
  • Moderate daily exercise.
  • Avoidance of daytime sleeping & cold exposure.

2. INTERNAL MEDICINE

  • Tab Liposem (1-0-1) for 7 days.
  • Tab.Arogyavardhini vati (1-0-1) for 7 days.

3. PANCHAKARMA THERAPIES

The patient underwent a series of panchakarma therapies, including

  • Snehapana (medicated ghee intake)
  • Abhyanga and Bashpa sweda
  • Virechana (purgation)

CONCLUSION:

In the presented case study, a remarkable result was obtained in treating dyslipidaemia and attaining reduced cholesterol levels by administering therapeutic cleansing procedure such as virechanam along with ayurvedic medicine. Before total cholesterol level was 305 mg/dL and now it has reduced to 288 mg/dL Patient had attained lower cholesterol level within 2 months.

The results suggest that virechana is a highly significant treatment modality for Dyslipidaemia, with no apparent complication.
